I know it can be difficult to keep up a routine, especially at home when nobody is checking up on you or holds you accountable. This is why I have come up with the following tips and tricks for your yoga home practice or personal practice.
1) Create a Wake-up Routine
Start by setting an alarm and a realistic time when you would like to wake up. Working out in the morning can be part of your morning routine. Take enough time for getting ready and eating breakfast. Ideally you would like to work out on an empty stomach because it is healthier and more affective to do so. You will feel better and achieve better results.
2) Prepare your Day ahead
Ideally you prepare the evening before what you have/want to accomplish the next day. What meetings are in your calendar? Are there any important deadlines? Remind yourself of what you have to do the next day and make sure to take enough breaks. Maybe there is time for a 30-60 minute gym session? Ideally you would like to set aside time for eating, resting and working out.
3) Keep a Workout Routine with Regular and New Exercises
What keeps your workout interesting is a combination of exercises that you already know work for you and new exercises. Keep regular exercises that you know work well on your body and mind, and include new exercises by trying out different exercises. You can find these on YouTube for free. (You can sign up for my programme and I can show you personally how to establish that.)
4) Cook healthy Food
Cooking meals yourself is usually better than buying ready-meals or eating out. You decide what you put in your body and how it tastes. It is more time consuming but you will feel a shift in your overall wellbeing when you eat whole foods, vegetables and fruits. Try and pick a variety of veggies and fruits to include in your diet. Moreover, try to limit your refined sugar intake by reducing the amount of sweets or ready-made meals you buy. Drinking lots of water is also very important to flush out toxins out of your system.
5) Sleep Well and Reduce Stress
Sleep is very important for your overall health and wellbeing. Sleeping too little and being stressed can cause diseases long-term. Pay attention to the quality of your sleep and make sure you sleep well and deep, without any irritations. During the day, try and reduce the amount of stress you put yourself under. Take breaks, don’t take things too seriously and let go of any negative energy. Change your circumstances to adjust your life to make you feel good 70% of the time. You want to feel good more than you feel bad. I know it is difficult to remove all stresses from life but try to minimise them as much as possible even if it means to do some changes.
6) Slow Down
We are increasingly living in a fast-paced world. Especially, with the rise of technology things are getting faster and probably also out of control. It has become convenient to use our devices more and possibly we are overloaded with information on a daily basis. Take consciously time to slow down. Put away your phone, start to connect with people face-to-face. Focus on yourself by honouring the time you need for yourself away from technology. Spend more time with animals and in nature. It is proven to release more positive chemicals/hormones in your brain.
I hope these tips and tricks help you with your personal practice and your routine. If you have any further questions, do let me know.
